Stamp Act

About the Stamp Act

  • The Stamp act was a tax passed by the British Parliament on March 22, 1765 (A  Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

  • The Stamp Act required people to pay a tax on every piece of paper that they used, such as legal documents, news papers, ship's papers, license, and other publications (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

  • The tax was for paying the costs of the troops that the British had sent to the American colonies (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

  • The colonists were not worried as much about the taxing itself than to what the taxing could lead to considering the British Parliament passed the tax without the permission of the colonial legislature (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

  • The colonists were worried about far more troublesome taxes that the British Parliament could throw at them in the future (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

Resolution

  • The colonists didn't try to stop the taxing until the Virginia House of Burgesses adopted the Patrick Henry Stamp Act Resolves (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)

  • The resolves declared the the American colonists had the same rights as the British citizens, especially the aspect that tey should only be taxed by their own represenatative (A Summary of the 1765 Stamp Act)
