Civilian Conservation Corps

About the CCC:

  • The Civilian Conservation Corps was formed in March 1933, it was one of the first New Deal programs. (Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • It was a public works project intended to not only help with environmental conservation, but also to help outmen, and turn them into better citizens. (Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt believed that this "tree army" would help out the rural unemplyed, and also help out the youth by keeping them "off the city corners." Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • The CCC was under the control of the army, commanders of the camps had disciplinary powers, and the corpsmen had to address the commanders as "sir."Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • The CCC work focused around reforestation, and soil conservation.  The CCC is responsible for over half of the reforestaion in the nation's history. (Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • The CCC planted over 3 billion trees (The Civilian Conservation Corps)

  • In all nearly 3 million young men participated in the CCC, however the CCC failed to be equal towards the blacks.  The blacks were unable to get their share of the CCC, especially in the South.  (Civilian Conservation Corps)
